ACO drainage power in Battersea

The London skyline is forever changing, however there are a small number of instantly recognisable landmarks which help define the capital city.

Standing proudly on the south bank, Battersea Power Station is one such landmark.

Once the main source of power for South London and beyond for over 50 years, the site ceased operation in the 1980s. The intervening years witnessed many proposals for the iconic-four chimneyed site, from theme parks to football stadiums, before it finally achieved a new identity as Nine Elms, one of London’s most high profile property developments in 2012.

The 200-acre regeneration zone will be centred around the Battersea Power Station site, and once complete, it will encompass more than three million square foot of retail, hospitality, and office space, as well as 4,000 new homes.

Given the high-end nature of the development, delivering a discreet but effective water management solution that would seamlessly blend in with the wider aesthetic was an essential part of the site’s infrastructure work. ACO assisted in helping create part of the integrated drainage solution.

As part of Phase 1 of the new development, which focuses around the original power station site, 2,200m of ACO’s MultiDrain M100 channel is being installed, complete with sleek Brickslot grating, to aid with the fast removal of surface water from the area.

Nick Burchett, Regional Sales Engineer at ACO Water Management, commented: “ACO Brickslot is designed to be a subtle and unobtrusive grating which, when combined with ACO MultiDrain MD galvanised or stainless steel channels, formed the ideal solution for the discreet drainage applications required for the Nine Elms project at Battersea Power Station.”

As well as its sleek profile, the vertical sides of the Brickslot grating enable pavements to be laid directly to the unit’s edge and, once installed, provides a totally secure drainage system that is less vulnerable to vandalism or loose gratings.

Nick Burchett, continued: “We worked closely with the contractor and ACO’s short lead time in delivering the UK-manufactured product, was an important factor in ACO being chosen to deliver the drainage solution here at Battersea.”

The next exciting part of the development, Phase 3 of the Battersea Project, is currently under construction with an expected completion date of 2020. This includes the pedestrianised ‘Electric Boulevard’, boasting 45 new shops, 12 cafes and restaurants, and a further 1,300 new homes.
