The historic Church Road in Hitchin is now home to popular Town Centre shops, pubs and restaurants, so it is subject to frequent traffic including heavy delivery trucks and brewery drays.
The historic granite sett paving is incredibly durable and long-lasting, but the traditional cement mortar jointing had deteriorated under this modern street stress and had been patched and replaced many times.
Hertfordshire Highways Engineers made a series of visits to inspect other completed granite paving refurbishment projects and trial areas were laid in the road with all of the leading paving jointing products.
The clear winner was GftK’s vdw 855 Paving Joint Mortar - this is ‘State-of-the-Art’ and specifically designed to accommodate heavy traffic loading.
It is easily installed as a self-compacting slurry, even at low temperatures and in the pouring rain if necessary. It then hardens rapidly to provide a highly durable surface that is fully resistant to mechanical road sweepers and freeze-thaw cycling in winter.
