Ground Control create multi-functional woodland

Ground Control, the UK’s leading landscaping and external maintenance provider, plant over 22,000 trees in response to Government’s ongoing efforts to grow woodland cover as part of the ambitious 25 Year Environment Plan.

Being heavily invested in caring for the environment and committed to improving the fabric of this planet, Billericay-based Ground Control create 22 acres of woodland in Essex, to deliver tangible benefits such as removing CO2 from the nation’s atmosphere and driving forward conservation by increasing biodiversity.

Expected to be completed by early 2019, the 22 acres of woodland will be made up of 22,734 native trees and shrubs, which will create a new, sustainable habitat, capture 3000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent by year 50, improve water quality and flood catchment management.

Ground Control worked with the Forestry Commission to develop this woodland creation project, with the tree planting beginning at the end of November. Crowders and Alba Trees, who grow over 10 million quality trees for rapid delivery throughout the UK, have supplied the broadleaved trees and shrubs, with Green-Tech providing the shelters and tree spiral guards.

Being experts in large scale tree installation, planting and maintenance, Ground Control will create the woodland with minimum disruption and with the expertise to make sure it lasts for years to come. With a detailed ongoing management regime, they will intensively maintain the area for the first ten years until it is established.

Chris Bawtree, Project Manager at Ground Control, explained: ’We are thrilled to be able to create a new substantial woodland here in Essex.

"Not only will this development help mitigate the impact of greenhouse gas emissions, but it will also contribute to wider environmental benefit. The creation of more woodland is hugely important to us and supports the government’s commitment to increase UK woodland cover to provide habitats for wildlife, help to prevent flood risk and ultimately reduce carbon in our atmosphere. We encourage everyone to protect and enhance our environment for future generations.’’

Ground Control would like to thank all organisations which were consulted throughout the development of this sustainable woodland creation scheme, including the Forestry Commission, Environment Agency, Essex Wildlife Trust, National Grid, Anglian Water and Essex County Council.
