Raise
money for the Royal British Legion and help butterflies and bees at
the same time.
Every
square metre of Passchendaele Poppy Meadowmat sold between March and
June 2014 will raise money for the Royal British Legion. This latest
addition to Meadowmat's range of wild flower matting contains a
generous helping of remembrance poppies in honour of all the men and
women who have served in the armed forces.
Growing
alongside the poppies are 34 species of perennial wild flowers and
grasses. These have been specially selected to provide food and
shelter for beneficial insects.
Meadowmat
is colourful, enigmatic and surprisingly easy to establish and
maintain. It's a must for anyone wanting to do their bit for the
environment.
What is Meadowmat?
Meadowmat is pre-grown
matting with a variety of grasses and flowering plants growing in it.
It's similar to wild flower turf in that it's a wildflower
meadow on a roll. It just needs to be unfurled onto prepared ground
and watered in to create a low maintenance wild flower area.
There are three
different types of Meadowmat
Traditional
Wildflower Meadowmat emulates an old fashioned meadow with lots
of oxeye daisies, clover, birdsfoot trefoil and many other pollinator
friendly flowers. The seed mix contains 50% grasses and 50%
flowering plants. Traditional Meadowmat provides pollen and nectar
for insects as well as food plants for butterfly lavae.
The seed mix for
Meadowmat for Birds and Bees contains 20% native grasses and
80% flowering plants. These plants are nearly all perennials and
have been selected to provide either a rich source of nectar for
bees; or nutritious autumn seed heads for bird food.
Passchendaele Poppy
Meadowmat is similar to the Traditional mix but has an extra
splash of colour from the remembrance poppies added to the seed mix.
For a relatively small
investment, Meadowmat will give instant ground cover, a beautiful
summer-long floral display, a big tick in the box for wildlife
conservation and a fascinating talking point for you and your
family.
Caring for Meadowmat
Once
Meadowmat is established it's very easy to care for. Each of the 3
different floral mixes needs a slightly different maintenance regime
but in essence, it's just a matter of letting the plants grow,
flower and set seed and then cutting down and removing spent
vegetation so that they cycle can begin again. That's normally one
cut per year and very little work to do for the rest of the time.
How to order
Meadowmat and raise money for the Royal British Legion
Passchendaele Poppy
Meadowmat has been grown especially to commemorate the centenary of
the First World War.
The matting contains a
generous proportion of colourful remembrance poppies that will bloom
in June and July alongside the other wild flowers in the mix.
In addition to the
stunning visual effect of Passchendaele Poppy Meadowmat, the BREEAM
points and the wildlife interest, for every square metre sold,
Meadowmat will donate 50 pence to the Royal British Legion. Money
donated will be used to help serving and veteran forces personnel as
