UltraScape are delighted to have partnered with Arcadis, sustainable design experts, for the redesign of Walnut Bridge in Guildford.
Walnut Bridge, in Guildford, provides key access from Guildford Train Station, over the River Wey, to the nearby Law Courts and Odeon Cinema. The bridge also acts an alternative route to the town centre and provides access to various car parks.
Having initially been laid on a sand bed with kiln dried sand for jointing, it is unsurprising that before long, the joints were completely washed out and the paving started to show signs of movement.
It was at this point that world-leading sustainable design consultants, Arcadis, were approached to redesign the paving area and find a solution to this problem.
Arcadis contacted UltraScape to find out more about their BS 7533 compliant Mortar Paving System. After careful research and consideration, Arcadis knew the best, and most cost-effective solution, was to create a completely solid structure using UltraScape eco-bed bedding mortar, in conjunction with pro-prime slurry primer and flowpoint flowable grout.
To begin, UltraScape eco-bed was applied to the area to produce the ultimate foundation for the paving. UltraScape eco-bed can be laid from 10mm – 100mm, is shrinkage compensated and can be opened to foot traffic after just 12 hours, allowing contractors to move on to the next part of the installation quickly. In addition to its superb performance qualities, eco-bed also contains 20% recycled material.
With eco-bed in place, Zack Contractors coated the mortar and paving with pro-prime slurry primer to create an exceptional bond. Using a primer eliminates costly failures caused by general wear and tear and gives you confidence and peace of mind that the paving slabs will not come loose.
To complete the installation, market-leading flowpoint smooth flowable grout, in Natural Grey, was used to joint the paving. With an initial set of just 15 minutes, and a walk on time of one hour, it is unsurprising that flowpoint has become synonymous with fast application, cost-effective and robust jointing.
Using UltraScape’s BS 7533 Mortar Paving System, Zack Contractors, who are working on behalf of main contractors VolkerLaser, have relayed the paving across the bridge and surrounding area, creating a solid structure and seamless finish.
Guildford Borough Council are delighted with the finished result. Walnut Bridge is not only performing well but also looks fantastic.
What’s more, Zack Contractors were so delighted with the products and service they received from UltraScape, that they are using their paving installation materials on their next project in Bristol.
