Proludic and its client Havant Borough Council have unveiled a £200,000 transformation of a seaside play park at Eastoke on Hayling Island, designed to cater to children, and teenagers, alongside a dedicated exercise zone featuring a strength training station, cardio equipment, MUGA and a floor exercise area.
This ambitious project sought to rejuvenate a popular yet neglected seaside facility, previously marred by the harsh effects of sea air.
The renovation aimed not only to refurbish the space but also to ensure its durability against saline corrosion. Proludic’s equipment is designed to withstand the toughest of climates. Emphasing inclusivity, the design incorporated play elements accessible to users of all abilities.
Inspired by local heritage, a bespoke wheelchair-accessible train unit, reminiscent of the Hayling Light Railway, has been introduced. This unique feature accommodates up to eight users, enriching the social play experience and fostering inclusivity. To combat the corrosive sea air, durable materials, including hot-zinc-dip galvanisation and powder coating, were used, ensuring longevity and minimal maintenance.
Proludic, the project installer, worked closely with Havant Borough Council to meet community needs. Key installations include a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) and Proludic ACTI’FUN Outdoor Fitness Equipment. The MUGA features an open layout with lower fencing on one side to avoid a ‘cage-like’ feel, dual entrances, and markings for various sports, including football, basketball, netball, and cricket. Wall targets and a cricket wicket further enhance user engagement.
In the gym area, the focus on accessibility is evident with a callisthenics unit featuring wheelchair-accessible monkey bars and dip bars. Complementing this, the Proludic ACTI’Fit gym equipment caters to diverse exercise styles, ensuring a comprehensive fitness experience. Floor markings delineate exercise zones for intuitive use.
This revitalised play park and fitness stands as a testament to the power of inclusive design and meticulous delivery planning. By prioritising accessibility and equipment coastal resilience, the project has created a vibrant space catering to the community's diverse long-term needs, fostering social cohesion and physical wellbeing. This endeavour serves as a model for future projects, showcasing the profound impact of thoughtful design in enhancing quality of life and community engagement.
