Partnership to develop Level 3 Landscape Technician Apprenticeship

The Landscape Institute (LI) has partnered with Engineering Skills College, part of London Design & Engineering UTC (LDE UTC) to develop the Level 3 Landscape Technician Apprenticeship.

This is a 24-month programme designed to equip the next generation of landscape professionals with the practical skills, technical knowledge, and professional connections needed to shape greener, healthier, and more sustainable places.

Kelli Cochran-Sharp, Education Manager (Higher Education and Apprenticeships) at the LI said: “The Landscape Institute is delighted to partner with Engineering Skills College (ESC) to deliver the Level 3 Landscape Technician Apprenticeship.

“This collaboration marks an important step in strengthening the profession’s talent pipeline, ensuring apprentices gain both high-quality teaching and industry-recognised professional support. By combining ESC’s excellent facilities and teaching expertise with the Landscape Institutes role in setting standards and connecting learners with employers, we are building a powerful pathway into landscape careers.

“Together, we are supporting the next generation of technicians who will help shape greener, healthier, and more sustainable places across the UK.”

Funded at £9,000 per learner through government support, the apprenticeship combines remote learning, in-person practical sessions, and a final end-point assessment, enabling apprentices to earn a salary while gaining hands-on experience. The programme offers training in design, planning, environmental management, and industry-standard software such as CAD and GIS, alongside creative and technical problem-solving skills.

Apprentices also benefit from membership of the Landscape Institute, progressing from Student Member to Technician Member, giving access to professional events, resources, and recognition. Engineering Skills College provides expert teaching and modern facilities, while the LI ensures the programme meets professional standards and connects apprentices directly with employers across the sector.

The programme will launch its first cohort in January 2026, with an in-person launch event at Engineering Skills College on Friday 17 October 2025. Register on eventbrite to attend.

Sharna Rolle, Head of Apprenticeships at the Engineering Skills College said: “As part of our ongoing commitment to strengthening external partnerships and responding to industry needs, we are delighted to be at the forefront of introducing this standard as a new addition to ESC’s provision. Working in partnership with the Landscape Institute, will ensure we provide employer-led training where demand is high and future opportunities are strong.”
