Rethinking outdoor materials - the rise of GRP

For landscapers and designers of outdoor amenities, material choice goes beyond structural performance—it’s about longevity, safety, and visual harmony.

In this context, Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) products are increasingly specified as a smart alternative to traditional steel and timber, with specialist solutions from GRIPCLAD —such as GRP grating, anti-slip flat plates, anti-slip decking strips, GRP handrailing, and GRP structural profiles—enhancing performance in demanding environments.

Outdoor conditions—moisture, soil, fertilisers, and fluctuating weather—can quickly degrade steel, leading to rust and ongoing maintenance. GRP, by contrast, is inherently corrosion-resistant. Its composite structure of resin and fibreglass allows it to withstand chemical and environmental stressors commonly found in landscaped settings, from irrigation systems to coastal air. As a result, it maintains both structural integrity and appearance over time, even in challenging conditions. GRIPCLAD GRP grating and structural profiles are particularly well-suited to these environments, offering strength without the risk of corrosion.

Safety is another key consideration, particularly in public-facing spaces like parks, walkways, and recreational areas. GRP is non-conductive, making it a safer choice around lighting, water features, and electrically powered installations. In addition, GRIPCLAD incorporates advanced anti-slip surface products across its product range, providing reassurance in wet or high-traffic areas where slips and falls are a concern. GRP handrailing systems further enhance safety by offering durable, low-maintenance edge protection and guidance.

Installation is typically faster and more efficient than with steel. GRP’s lightweight nature makes it easier to transport and manoeuvre, particularly in gardens, parks, or restricted-access sites where heavy machinery may not be practical. Panels such as GRP grating and flat plates can be cut and adjusted without welding, enabling quick, precise modifications as designs evolve. GRIPCLAD systems are designed with ease of handling in mind to support efficient project delivery.

Maintenance requirements are minimal. GRP does not require painting, sealing, or rust treatment, and performs reliably under heavy footfall and exposure to the elements. It also has no scrap value, reducing the risk of theft in public or remote locations. GRIPCLAD full GRP product range offers a long-term, low-maintenance solution.

For outdoor environments where durability, safety, and design cohesion are essential, GRP offers a modern solution that supports both practical and creative ambitions—making GRIPCLAD products a reliable choice for landscape and design professionals.
