Boningale develops plastic pot recycling process

Boningale Ltd has developed an innovative plastic plant pot recycling process for use by clients, preventing pots from being sent for landfill.

Currently, plastic plant pots containing carbon black pigment are not widely accepted in kerbside collections, meaning many pots are sent to general waste, with landfill as a final destination.

With an estimated 500 million plastic pots in circulation every year, the issue is far-reaching, and has contributed to a stigma around industry attitudes towards waste management and recycling. Boningale Ltd’s Potback aims to minimize these issues by reducing the number of pots sent to landfill.

Potback facilitates the return of used plant pots back to the Boningale Ltd site, where they are compacted and sent for recycling, and guaranteed to avoid landfill. This streamlines waste management processes, encourages closed loop recycling and can be used as a marketing tool by clients.

The Potback process is simple. Firstly, clients place their plants order, with the option to add a Potback crate. After delivery, the client assembles the crate and stacks their used plastic plant pots inside. Boningale Ltd vehicles then collect these crates at a convenient time. Upon return to Boningale Nurseries, the pots are compacted and baled, ready for recycling.

Craig Monks, Sales & Marketing Director at Boningale Ltd, added: “We are delighted to announce that any profits made from Potback will be donated to Perennial, a UK charity providing advice, support and financial assistance to those working in, or retired from, horticulture.”

Potback will be officially launched at Perennial’s “Party for Perennial” on Thursday, 23 January 2020 in London.
