Organised by LANDSCAPE, the trade show for the landscaping industry, and Wandsworth Council, designers were asked to look at a previously unused area of the park and make it accessible to the public.
Senior Judge Jerry Birtles, Chief Parks Officer for Wandsworth Council said: "We were impressed by the quality of all the entries and found it very hard to choose.
"I realise this may seem like us spouting the usual line but it was indeed difficult to choose. Each design had its own strong points. However, in the end we had to pick and we chose David Keary's design.
"We like it's simple, but strong lines, with the path widening in a sweep down the river frontage. We think it makes the best of the promontory's location to give really good viewing points up, down and across the river and in choosing to match the seats to our existing designs. We liked that consideration had been given to making the hard areas large enough to have potential to accommodate modest organised events.
"The sculpted mounds which help define the garden are large enough to do so without being too "intrusive". And, although they may need to be tailored here and there as regards height to accommodate the best of the existing trees, we feel this is readily achievable without any real compromise to the design.
"The planting make the most of a quite shaded site, meets the requirements of being in keeping with the Victorian heritage of the park, and particularly will be a relatively modest burden as regards maintenance – which for us is a fundamental requirement. Overall, we thought that most of the designs ticked most of the boxes, David Keary's ticked just one more than the others."
The LANDSCAPE showreturns to Battersea Park on the September 23 and 24 2014.
