Parish and town councils across the south east, along with private companies, are to witness the phenomenal impact of a revolutionary eco-friendly weedkiller at a demonstration offering an unusual combination of hot foam and genteel afternoon tea.
The event, to be held on Wednesday May 2 against the dramatic backdrop of the south coast's Newhaven Fort, will see Royal Warrant holder Burleys demonstrate the efficacy of the Soil Association approved Foamstream, which eliminates unwanted flora with super-heated foam while leaving ‘good' plants and soil unharmed.
Burleys, part of the wider TCL Group, is one of the few contractors nationwide to use the award winning system which uses a combination of hot water, steam and foam to ‘cook' weeds on contact.
The organic, biodegradable foam mixture is safe to use near children's playgrounds and watercourses making it a win-win alternative to chemical options.
Burleys has expanded the availability of the system following extensive trials carried out in conjunction with Lewes District Council which wanted to eliminate pesticides from all public areas of the town including parks and social housing.
Foamstream, developed by environmentally friendly weed control experts Weedingtech,
acts as a thermal blanket, keeping heat on the weed long enough to kill it. It also contains a wetting agent which enables the thermal energy to penetrate the weeds' waxy exterior walls, rupturing the cells, killing them quickly. Some die within minutes, with others taking a day or two. A second application can eliminate taproots.
An unexpected bonus is that the foam can also eliminate graffiti and remove chewing gum from pavements.
The foam is naturally derived from glucose and fat (otherwise known as alkyl polyglycoside), coconut, palm kernel and rapeseed oils from renewable sources, potato, wheat and maize.
Burleys has won a number of awards for its community mindedness and sustainability including Most Sustainable Business in the Sussex Business Awards and Green Business of the Year in the Lewes District Business Awards.
Newhaven Fort, built to prevent a perceived French invasion in the 19th century, is one of a long line of defences created along the cliffs overlooking Seaford Bay since the Iron Age.
The free event runs from 12.30 until 3.30pm on Wednesday May 2 and bookings can be made here.
