Railings restored in World War I Memorial Park

Huthwaite based metal railings and gates manufacturer, AlphaRail has help complete the finishing touches to £1m project to restore a Rail, World War One Memorial Park in Grantham, Lincolnshire.

Dating back to back to the 17th Century, Wyndham Park lies on the banks of the River Witham just to the north of Grantham town centre.

The park is named in honour of Lieutenant William Reginald Wyndham who died in Ypres during the First World War, and offers a wide range of facilities for both the young and old. It also proudly holds the Green Flag Award, the benchmark national standard for publicly accessible parks and green spaces in the United Kingdom.

The £1m park restoration project received £818,000 from Heritage Lottery and Big Lottery Funding, with the balance of funding raised by South Kesteven District Council and the Wyndham Park Forum.

The restored Memorial Park aims to invoke an era when men of the Machine Gun Corps marched through the historic Memorial Arch on their way to training at Belton Park.

Woodhead Construction was appointed as the main contractor on the project which included the construction of a new visitors centre with toilets, and the cost of restoring the Grade II listed ticket office, Memorial Arch and Model Boat Lake.

As part of the project, Alpha Rail was contracted to install welded unit estate railings to the perimeter of the memorial park. A number of single leaf gates were also supplied to provide park users with easy access in and out of the much loved park.

Alpha Rail was also installed pedestrian guardrails panels around the perimeter of the model boating lake to provide a safe barrier and prevent people from falling into the water.

Commenting on behalf of Woodhead Construction, Quantity Survey, David Read said, “Wyndham Park has become increasingly popular over the years, receiving over 800,000 visitors in the past year alone. With the help of Alpha Rail and other contractors, I’m proud that the work we have completed will continue to provide the local community with a park that can be enjoyed by all for many more years to come.”
