Digital courses for 2025 to help budding garden designers hone and advance technical skills

The Yorkshire School of Garden Design, led by renowned garden designer, Alistair Baldwin, has launched two expertly led courses online to equip budding garden designers with the skills to express their vision through the medium of software.

The courses, SketchUp for Garden Designers and SketchUp Layout and Planting Plans are tailored to help users at all levels master this powerful 3D design tool at their own pace, in their own time.

As demand for high-quality, accessible garden design education continues to grow, the online offerings provide flexible learning opportunities for those who want to integrate technology into their design process for professional development.

The Yorkshire School of Garden Design offers comprehensive courses through its teaching facility in Ripon, Yorkshire but the online courses provide the opportunity for learners to go at their own pace at a time to suit them, guiding them through every stage of using SketchUp to create stunning garden designs, from initial layout planning to creating detailed planting designs.

Students will have access to video tutorials, downloadable resources, and step-by-step guides that make learning SketchUp easy and enjoyable. As part of the course, they will also be able to download their own SketchUp models and start applying their new skills right away.

The courses have been created and are headed up by Alistair’s Baldwin’s expert garden designer and project manager, Ed Golding.

In each video Ed Golding carefully guides learners through all the elements of Sketchup needed to create accurate and engaging garden design models. Like the in-person course, this bespoke collection of videos has been specifically created for garden designers so focuses on those aspects of Sketchup needed to create the formwork and levels of garden design, adding textures and colours and bring life to the model through plants and accessories.

The course will also act as a stepping-stone for those wishing to further their design education with the Yorkshire School of Design’s popular Diploma in Garden Design.
