New inquiry on public spaces launched by House of Lords committee

The House of Lords Built Environment Committee is to investigate how Britain’s public spaces can be improved.

The Committee has launched its next inquiry: maintenance and enforcement in public spaces.

It wants to collect written evidence from as many people as possible, whether you’re a researcher, business owner, campaigner, or a member of the public.

The Committee is asking how public spaces can be designed, maintained and improved. The report it prepares, including recommendations for change, will be sent to the Government, who must reply to the Committee within two months.

From pavements to parks, the Committee wants to hear how public spaces can be designed and maintained to maximise quality of life for residents, business, community groups, shoppers and tourists.

It is particularly interested in learning about:

  • What impact good and bad public spaces have on people, communities and businesses.
  • What common problems affect public spaces and how these can be overcome.
  • Who is best placed to manage and maintain public spaces.
  • What data about public spaces is collected and how this be used and shared.
  • Examples of best practice for maintaining public spaces and how these can be replicated around the country.
  • What recommendations we can make to Government about how their policies relating to public space can be improved.

The deadline for the submission of written evidence is 23:59 on Friday 13 November.
