As an historic area of London reaches the third phase of its £180 million revitalisation, Boningale Nurseries with its green roof department, GreenSky, continues to contract grow and supply thousands of SkyPlugs for the community’s new green roofs.
At the Rathbone Market redevelopment in Canning Town, Boningale Nurseries has combined its unique horticulture and green roof expertise to help transform the landscape at each stage of the development.
Not only as the Nursery provided hundreds of semi-mature trees and perennials, it has also supplied with GreenSky, bespoke native SkyPlugs.
For the latest phase of the project, this included GreenSky supplying specific biodiverse plug and seed mixes, comprising around 4,000 plugs in total.
Maggie Fennell, Technical Green Roof Expert at Boningale GreenSky, confirmed that the development at Rathbone, which was shortlisted and Highly Commended in the 2014 Sunday Times British Homes Awards, has a strong ecological focus, with the designers keen to create a rich diversity of habitat areas within the urban complex.
“By giving us enough time to contract grow plants to order, we were able to extend beyond our normal stock species and supply more unusual native species, alongside our more popular wildlife-friendly SkyPlugs, to create bespoke habitat areas,” said Maggie.
The development has been designed to revitalise the once-thriving east London market and create 650 homes, shops, cafes, a market square and new council offices.
