A second Massey Ferguson compact tractor has joined the machinery fleet looking after the extensive grounds and playing fields of independent co-educational prep and pre-prep schools, Highfield and Brookham, located near Liphook, Hampshire.
Supplied by local Massey Ferguson dealer, Sendmarsh Tractors, the newcomer is a 25hp MF 1525H hydrostatic drive tractor equipped with 1.37m mid-mounted cutter deck, a mowing combination purchased primarily to maintain grass growing close to trees, shrubs and flower beds and in other awkward and restricted access areas.
Although the MF 1525H's compact dimensions and tight turning circle are proving ideal for mowing of confined spaces, the tractor's rear three-point linkage, 540rpm power take-off and two auxiliary spool valves give it the capacity to handle considerably more tasks than grass-cutting. This multi-purpose ability was a primary factor in the selection of a compact tractor rather than a dedicated ride-on mower by Estate and Facilities Manager, Paul Harris, following consultation with the schools' grounds staff.
"We considered a ride-on mid mower but felt that a compact tractor with mid cutter deck would be far more useful and cost-effective for our year-round requirements," explained grounds manager, John Naylor. "When it has finished mowing, the tractor can be attached quickly to a trailer, turf aerator or other implement to help maintain sports pitches, hard surfaces and the schools' own par-3 golf course."
Selected following competitive demonstrations of three different makes of tractor, the MF 1525H scored highly on ease of use, all-round visibility and purchase price. It helped also that Highfield and Brookham have run successfully since autumn 2011 a 46hp MF 1547 tractor with air-conditioned cab and DynaQPS push-button transmission, this tractor being used both for large-area mowing and general grounds maintenance.
