Tensar supplies geogrids for SSE Highlands wind farm project
A north Highland wind farm has benefited from innovative Tensar geogrid technology which has provided mechanical stabilisation in challenging areas of soft ground.

Tensar, a worldwide leader in the manufacture and the provision of subgrade stabilisation, pavement optimisation and soil reinforcement, was called upon by civil engineering contractor R J McLeod to supply the site of Scotland's Strathy North wind farm with nearly 100,000m² of its market leading TriAx geogrids.

Selected to allow safe, reliable transport on the SSE Renewables-run project's 18km of access roads, a combination of TriAx TX190L and TX160 geogrids have been used to provide stabilisation for the routes.

Placed directly on the subgrade, TriAx geogrids interlock with and confine the granular fill material, allowing reduced thicknesses of aggregate to be used while also cutting the level of excavation required, helping to lower both construction times and costs. These mechanically stabilised layers also offer increased bearing capacity, allowing greater loads to be transported, assisting in the reduction of COâ‚‚ emissions.

Speaking of Tensar's involvement in the project, Ryan MacLean at RJ McLeod said: "Challenging site conditions can impact all elements of a project, fortunately we were able to mitigate this through the use of Tensar's TriAx geogrids.

"In addition to allowing the creation of a safe, stable access route, by using TriAx geogrids we could also reduce the project's overall costs, and environmental impact."

Drew McCartney, Tensar's Area Civil Engineer for Scotland, added: "At Tensar we have more than 20 years of experience in working on wind farm projects and this is another instance where our systems have provided substantial benefits. It's an honour to have been appointed to such a significant energy project and we look forward to working with R J McLeod in the future."

Turbine deliveries to the site are expected to be completed by the end of summer 2015, with the site scheduled to be fully operational by the end of the year.
