Doors set to open at packed South West Growers Show 2017

The clock is ticking down to the opening of South West Growers Show (SWGS) on WednesdayOctober 4, the only trade event in the region aimed at growers and plant buyers from local authorities, garden centres and retailers.

SWGS takes place at the Matford Centre, Exeter, and will see highlights from new and familiar exhibitors, as well as a busy seminar and awards schedule.

Amongst the highlights will be new exhibitor Beaver Plants (stand 40), showing its range of aquatic plants in a variety of sizes for the trade, from 3.5cm plugs to 10L finished products. This family owned business has propagated and grown aquatic plants since the company started some 40 years ago, from its nursery near Gatwick, Surrey.

Over the last 15 years it has expanded its range to include Hostas, Ornamental Grasses, Perennials and the award-winning Lifestyle Collection, comprising many new Canna varieties and other architectural, contemporary and tried and tested varieties. These are all available in 9cm to 10L sizes.

Elsewhere, ICL celebrates 50 years of nutrition excellence with Osmocote controlled release fertiliser (CRF), and will also be launching a liquid formulation of H2Gro from stand 35 at the event. H2Gro is the unique, efficient and reliable wetting and water conservation agent and the liquid formulation has important applications for overwintered stock, interior plantscapes and pre-dispatch to extend plant shelf life.

As SWGS introduces a new landscape, amenity and turfcare section for 2017, ICL will also for the first time showcase key products from its Turf and Landscape range.

To learn more about the latest ICL innovations, Andrew Wilson (ICL’s professional horticulture technical manager) will be giving a 30-minute seminar at 2pm entitled ‘An holistic approach to plant production’.

This will culminate an informative seminar programme including contributions earlier in the day from APHA (Animal and Plant Health Agency) focusing on Xylella fastidiosa and other relevant pests, diseases and plant health issues.

Later, Clive Pearson from XL Pro-Bio will be talking about the benefits of using good biology in both growing media and sports profiles and why and how we should look at what other products we apply to achieve a healthy plant. Clive will also be on hand after the seminar to answer any questions on compost tea and biological plant health.

This will complement a full-showcase from across industry during the day, with latest ranges, innovations and introductions on display.

Another newcomer from 2017 is Polyhouses.com (stand 51), a division of Fordingbridge, promoting its premium quality polytunnels for the professional grower and retail purposes.

Elsewhere, Ball Colegrave (stand 57) will be promoting over 200 innovative new bedding, vegetable and perennial varieties for the 2018 season, all of which have been “tried and tested” for garden performance in its own Trial Grounds.

PlantWorks (stand 59), the only UK grower of mycorrhizal fungi marketed under the Empathy brand, will also show a range of professional products for the amenity, horticultural and agricultural sector.

Vitax (stand 5) will be showcasing its extensive range of high quality composts for professional growers, produced entirely from its own resources to ensure quality and consistency. Agralan (stand 69) will have a full line-up on show, including the latest Birchmeier sprayers. This includes the new range of high powered battery sprayers, offering easy and convenient operation in multiple environments.

The SWGS awards will be announced at lunch-time. The best Nursery Stand Award is sponsored by the South West Growers Show Committee, while the Best New Plant Introduction Award will be presented on behalf of the Commercial Greenhouse Grower. Finally, the Best New Plant Product or Service Award category is sponsored by the Commercial Horticultural Association.

The South West Growers Show is the only trade event in the region aimed at growers and plant buyers from local authorities, garden centres, retail outlets and the landscaping industry. The event takes place at the Matford Centre in Exeter, Devon. Register now by visiting www.swgs.co.uk, and pick your badge up on arrival.
