At the 41st BALI National Landscape Awards, BALI Registered Contractor Maylim received the coveted Grand Award for One Tower Bridge, a stunning mixed-use development directly adjacent to one of London’s most iconic landmarks.
The BALI National Landscape Awards recognise the excellence in landscape design, construction and maintenance, and in Affiliate customer service, achieved by Registered members of the British Association of Landscape Industries. 115 entries were received this year and 80 awards made.
The Awards ceremony was hosted by popular BBC journalist and Breakfast business presenter Steph McGovern, who addressed the record-breaking audience of over 1000 BALI members and guests during the luncheon and joined Awards sponsors on stage to present the 29 Principal and Special Awards. The presentation of the Grand Award to Maylim’s Managing Director Thomas O’Mahony, was made by headline sponsor Green-tech’s Sales Director, Richard Gill.
VIP guests this year included Professor Nicola Spence, Defra’s Chief Plant Health Officer; Neil Parish MP, Chair of the EFRA Select Committee; Dr Phil Askew, Director of Landscape & Placemaking, Peabody; Martin Simmons, Director of Operations, Horticultural Trades Association; Daniel Cook, Chief Executive Officer, Landscape Institute; Matthew Bradbury, Chairman, The Parks Alliance; Sarah Morgan, Chair, and Craig Moyes, COO, Society of Garden Designers.
Maylim, who are based in North London, were awarded the Grand Award - BALI’s highest accolade - at this year’s ceremony for their landscaping of the One Tower Bridge. The BALI Awards adjudication panel highlighted the company’s attention to detail throughout the project and their ability to overcome huge logistical challenges as key to their Awards success.
Although Maylim have undertaken numerous high profile projects, including Phase one of the Battersea Power Station redevelopment and work to extend Tate Modern, this is the first time they have entered a project into the BALI National Landscape Awards. Commenting on the company’s achievement, chair of the adjudication panel Greg Allen said:
“One Tower Bridge is a magnificent advertisement for British landscaping and Maylim is a worthy recipient of the 2017 BALI Grand Award. To receive the highest possible landscaping accolade at their first attempt is remarkable. This year I and my fellow judges were, once again, faced with having to select one scheme that shone out from amongst the other Principal winners that we had identified as truly exceptional. Our choice of One Tower Bridge as the Grand Award winner was unanimous and we applaud and congratulate everyone at Maylim for delivering a beautiful piece of landscaping artistry.”

BALI’s chosen charities – Thrive, which uses horticulture and gardening to bring about changes in the lives of those who are vulnerable or living with ill health or disability, and the BALI Chalk Fund, which supports education and training in the landscape sector – benefitted from a collection at the event.
