Sarah Price has won a gold medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2018 for M&G Investments, the international asset manager. This is M&G’s fourth gold medal at Chelsea.
This year’s M&G Garden is a Mediterranean-themed celebration of colour and texture, light and shadow. Sarah Price has experimented with an incredibly tactile array of raw materials and an exciting palette of over 170 varieties of plant, all of which originate from Mediterranean climates.
Red aggregates, clay and terracotta provide a sense of warmth and richness. Textured, rammed earth walls and stacked tiles frame the spaces, creating contrast and intrigue. Mediterranean flora create unfolding views offer tantalising glimpses of twisted wisteria stems, graceful Lagerstroemiatrees, scented thyme carpets and in the heart of the garden, the rugged form of two mature pomegranate trees.
Colour in the garden is unexpected and dazzling. The use of intricate, layered planting creates an almost pointillist vision when viewed from afar. A clashing cacophony of deep pinks, lilacs and yellow flowers are held together by swards of grasses. Gravel scree plantings of Asphodelus, Dianthusand delicate poppies interweave informal pathways surrounded by low tapestries of ground hugging, scented herbs and the silvery tones of sub shrubs.
Sarah Price says: “I am really thrilled to have won a gold medal. It is a great honour to have been chosen among such gifted designers at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show. I want to thank my fantastic team, Crocus and of course M&G for making all of this possible. Its sponsorship of the Show over many years has made a real difference to horticulture.”
2018 marks M&G’s ninth year as title sponsor of RHS Chelsea Flower Show. M&G has been helping people to prosper by putting their savings to work for more than 85 years.
