The future of Urban Infrastructure to be debated

With the UK’s population increasingly concentrated in high-density towns and cities, the urban environment has never been more important. Uniting green, blue, grey and social and economic infrastructure, the Urban Infrastructure Hub at Futurebuild 2019 will provide a concentrated platform for visitors to explore and discuss all aspects of the city, apart from the buildings themselves.

Supporting professionals working across all segments of the built environment, from prestigious residential and commercial projects through to affordable social housing initiatives, the Hub will explore universal infrastructure challenges and champion the development of urban environments that work better for inhabitants.

Central to the Urban Infrastructure experience will be the dedicated seminar programme, sponsored by ACO. The extensive programme will feature prominent experts and deliver CPD-accredited sessions on topics, ranging from urban climate-led design to how to put placemaking first.

To support in putting new-found knowledge to use straight away, over 50 exhibiting brands and key trade associations will provide an immersive backdrop featuring a multitude of new product launches, practical demonstrations and exciting feature attractions.

Futurebuild in 2019 - March 5-7 at ExCel London, is looking at all aspects of urban infrastructure, defined as “everything that is not a building”, which includes green, blue, grey (engineered) and social and economic infrastructure.

The UK Stakeholders for Sustainable Development (UKSSD) – the network driving action on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the UK – measured the UK’s progress against the SDGs in 2018. It examined the 17 goals and 169 targets and considered that 143 of the targets needed to be delivered in the UK.

Currently the UK is only doing well on 24% of these, with inadequate responses on 57% and poor performance on 15%. The SDGs are all interrelated and should be part of all our work in the built environment.

The industry is facing multiple challenges and all those engaged in design and delivery in the built environment need to respond. The seminar programme provides an opportunity to explore and discuss some of these pressing challenges and prepare for action.
