It’s been another year of great success for Myerscough College apprentices, with awards galore for learners and it as a training provider.
As National Apprenticeship Week continues, it has looked at just a selection of regional and national awards
Two Myerscough College learners have become among the first to enter the greenkeeping sector on completion of an apprenticeship that has raised the bar on standards.
Earlier this year Nik Wadsworth and Tom Bromfield became the first apprentices to pass out from Advanced Golf Greenkeeper Level 3 and are already applying their new skills across British courses, as they step on to a career ladder they hope will see them reach greens team management.
Content for the two-year course was developed by a group of employers and BIGGA advisors with a remit to upskill the sector.
Reaction from apprentices to date strongly suggests Level 3 has equipped them with a platform to move right up to the top, thanks to their commitment to succeed, inspirational tutors and supportive managers.
A Myerscough College arboriculture apprentice won a national award.
Gabriella Jardin was named a winner at the inaugural Land-Based & Environment Learner of the Year Awards 2023 in the category of Arboriculture, Forestry and Woodland Management.
Lantra and Landex teamed up to celebrate talent in the land-based & environment sector with England and Northern Ireland’s inaugural Land-based & Environment Learner Awards.
The Land-based & Environment Learner (LBEL) Awards were launched by leading land-based training & qualification awarding body Lantra, and the representative body for land-based colleges and universities, Landex, with the aim of celebrating and rewarding the industries’ top candidates.
Gabriella is only the Royal Horticultural Society’s second female arborist, working at RHS Bridgewater in Salford, and recently completed a Level 2 apprenticeship in arboriculture.
Ceri Furber won Bronze in landscaping at a prestigious award ceremony, after competing alongside the other finalists from across the country to be crowned the UK’s best young landscaper.
Finalists underwent a process of regional heats and intensive training before competing in the finals, held at Oldham College.
Myerscough College’s apprenticeship provision was recognised as the best in the country in an awards ceremony for the construction plant sector.
The UK’s best organisations, most promising apprentices and trainees in the construction plant sector were unveiled at the Construction Plant-hire Association’s (CPA) Stars of the Future Awards 2023.
Myerscough was named overall College of the Year at the event, held at the Heart of England Conference and Events Centre in Fillongley, near Coventry, recognising the college’s ongoing commitment to addressing the skills gap in the sector.
In addition, Myerscough was recognised alongside Sebastian Asiedu from Vp MEP Hire, after being named recipient of a Special Award for Future International Development.
For the third straight year, Myerscough College’s apprenticeship provision again achieved national recognition at the annual AAC Apprenticeship Awards.
Myerscough was named the Agriculture, Environmental and Animal Care Apprenticeship Provider of the Year category, defending the title the College won in both 2021 and 2022.
Myerscough was also shortlisted in the category of overall national Apprenticeship Provider of the Year.
A Myerscough College apprentice has been recognised for the quality of his work in the annual Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year awards.
The event celebrates the best student greenkeepers in the country, with Myerscough boasting five finalists this year in total.
Ryan Fiander from Myerscough College secured the runner up position at an event at Carden Park in Cheshire.
Ryan works at Lees Hall Golf Club in Sheffield, where he is Deputy Course Manager, while completing his Level 3 Advanced Golf Greenkeeper Apprenticeship Standard.
Each year the Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year Awards enable BIGGA, the UK’s only membership association for golf greenkeepers, to partner with turf maintenance equipment manufacturer Toro and distributor Reesink UK and celebrate the next generation of talented and dedicated greenkeepers.
