Perennial’s Dig Deep fundraising lunch a celebration of generosity and support

Perennial, the UK’s only charity dedicated to helping people in horticulture, proudly marked its 185th year with the Dig Deep for Perennial Fundraising Lunch, held at The Cumberland, Marble Arch, on 4 October.

Supported by beautiful floral arrangements from The Plantman & Co., the event gathered supporters and industry professionals, all united in their commitment to ensure a brighter future for those working in horticulture.

At the heart of the event was a shared goal: to raise essential funds for Perennial’s services, which provide support, advice, and practical help to horticulturists and their families in times of need. These funds ensure that Perennial can continue to be a lifeline for those who grow and care for the green spaces that enrich our lives.

Hosted by the energetic and charismatic James Alexander-Sinclair, the afternoon was filled with warmth and generosity. The event featured Perennial’s Envelope Raffle and an exciting Live Auction, led by Mark Head, The Charity Auctioneer. Together, these fundraising activities raised an impressive £25,000, which will go directly towards ensuring the charity can continue to provide free information, advice and support to those in need.

Auction items and raffle prizes were generously donated by nearly 70 individuals and organisations, including Hever Castle, Sandringham Estate, Headingley Golf Club, The Wimbledon Foundation, The Cumberland, The Savoy, Fulham Football Club, Clive Nichols Photography, Ginger Horticulture, Allington Castle, The Manor House, Ben Pope, The Laundry Retreat, and Kenny Wax Productions - to name just a few.

One of the most meaningful moments of the afternoon was the Silver Shovel Spotlight Awards, where Perennial took the opportunity to recognise and thank a group of individuals who have gone above and beyond in supporting the charity. These dedicated supporters have not only raised crucial funds but have also devoted their time and energy to ensuring Perennial’s message reaches those who need it most. Our heartfelt thanks go to Jo Huffener, Peter Hill, Francesca Murray, Mark Taylor, Gillian Taylor, David Dodd, Deric Newman, and Paul Willavoys for their extraordinary efforts.

Guests were also treated to an engaging and highly entertaining Q&A session with James Alexander-Sinclair and Alan Titchmarsh, Perennial’s President of 20 years, who shared his reflections on how vital Perennial’s support is to the individuals who make our gardens, parks, and green spaces flourish.

Reflecting on the overwhelming generosity shown at the event, Jamie Gault, Perennial Chief Executive added: "We were thrilled to see so many of our friends and supporters come together for this special lunch, all united by a shared purpose - to help build brighter, more sustainable futures for those in horticulture and their families. The funds raised today will directly support people who need it the most, ensuring that Perennial can continue to provide practical and emotional support to those who dedicate their lives to our industry. Thank you to everyone who contributed - you are making a real difference."

Horticulturists often face challenges such as seasonal work, low pay, physical injury, and uncertain employment. Perennial’s support services offer a critical safety net, helping individuals and their families navigate difficult times. By supporting fundraising efforts like the Dig Deep Lunch, you are helping ensure that those who dedicate their lives to caring for our green spaces can receive the help they need when it matters most.

The funds raised during the Dig Deep for Perennial Lunch will help sustain Perennial’s services, from financial support to housing advice, and ensure that horticulturists and their families can access practical help when facing personal or professional crises. As Perennial celebrates its 185th year, it remains committed to being the lifeline for those who make the green spaces we all cherish possible.
