Weed management spraying - an eco conversation

Effective weed management on many surfaces, throughout the growing season, is crucial for maintaining healthy and productive grass swards, keeping surfaces clear of destructive plant roots and trip hazards.

Knapsacks remain the best option in small, difficult areas or where precise treatment is required.

None better than Cooper Pegler knapsack sprayers, which have been around for decades and rightly earned a reputation as the choice of professionals for their robust simplicity, enduring quality and the amount of spares or accessories available to the user. Good equipment ensures targeted application of herbicides, leading to optimal weed control.

Applying herbicides at the correct time is essential for effective weed control. Pre-emergence, also called ‘residual’ herbicides should be applied shortly after last frosts in spring to prevent weed seeds from germinating in clear areas of permeable ground for the maximum duration between 3-6 months.

They are typically utilised in areas such as shrub borders, gravel driveways and around critical infrastructure: rail, pipelines, pump stations.

For post-emergence applications, targeting weeds when they are young and actively growing enhances herbicide effectiveness and reduces the likelihood of weed proliferation before they seed and spread – remember: ‘one years seeding – seven years weeding’

It may seem counter-intuitive to say spraying pesticides is good for the environment, but done properly, by a trained operative, it reduces the overall chemical commitment for the growing season - reducing the quantity of pesticide required and rewarding business with less strain through manual labour or resource while still following IPM (Integrated Pest Management)practices.

Cooper Pegler sprayers are also long-lived revealing a hidden benefit of less plastic production at one end and less waste at the other compared to cheap ‘throwaway’ sprayers that may last one year. ‘Buy cheap – buy twice’ is another maxim worth remembering.
