Cheshire’s award-winning family attraction, The Ice Cream Farm, is marking ten years with a significant new investment: The Ice Cream Fields.
The all-weather, outdoor play area is the single biggest change to the Tattenhall business since its £5m redevelopment in 2015.
Set to be The Ice Cream Farm’s best value attraction, The Ice Cream Fields is designed with inclusivity in mind and to ehance the visitor experience, whilst also helping to manage footfall during busy peak periods.
“We kicked off our tenth year by receiving an Autism Friendly Award, and were then named Cheshire’s best large visitor attraction of 2025,” said CEO and owner Jonathan Fell.
“Now with the opening of The Ice Cream Fields, I feel so proud of what the team has achieved in our milestone year, and excited for what this all means for the future of The Ice Cream Farm.”
To design the new attraction, The Ice Cream Farm called in Jupiter Play & Leisure – one of the original contractors for the 2015 redevelopment who helped to create outdoor play area, Daisy’s Garden.
Jupiter’s designers were given a detailed brief outlining Jonathan’s vision for the space. They were tasked with creating an all-weather, secure, outdoor play attraction that incorporated The Ice Cream Farm’s signature physical play equipment; designed to be inclusive for all children; featuring sensory elements; and to cater for a broad age range. Collaborating closely with Jonathan, Jupiter’s designers worked to bring his vision to life, striving to create something truly unique.
“Being invited back by a fellow family business is extremely heart-warming, especially to deliver the site’s most significant transformation in over 10 years,” said Michael Hoenigmann, Managing Director at Jupiter Play & Leisure.
“Ice Cream Fields is one of a kind, both in its design and the experience it offers. What sets this play space apart is its blend of innovation and inclusivity. Our first-ever “flavour generator” stations release the mouth-watering scents of different ice cream flavours when turned, bringing an extra sensory layer to each zone. The cherry on top? A bespoke Sona dance arch and custom game developed exclusively for the site, offering interactive fun for all ages and abilities.
“Our continued partnership is underpinned by a passion for quality, a commitment to sustainability, and a deep-rooted belief in the power of physical play. As award-winning family businesses, we understand the importance of creating spaces where children can safely explore, interact and make lasting memories.”
The Ice Cream Fields was officially opened on 4th June by Kyla, a student at Petty Pool College in Sandiway.
The Ice Cream Farm announced a partnership with Petty Pool at the beginning of the year, which has seen students with learning difficulties and disabilities placed with their mentors in flexible roles alongside the attraction’s team.
Vice Principal at Petty Pool College, Gareth Edwards, said: “To say we have been blown away so far with our partnership would be an understatement.
“Our learners have felt valued and supported, developing not only their job-specific skills but also their confidence, communication, and independence. The inclusive and nurturing environment created by The Ice Cream Farm, alongside our learner mentors, has clearly allowed them to thrive.”
The Ice Cream Farm is an independent family business started in 1986 by Tom and Margaret Fell, who began making ‘Real Dairy Ice Cream’ as a response to milk quotas.
Today their sons oversee the business; Graeme Fell, who owns the manufacturing side, Cheshire Farm Ice Cream, and Jonathan Fell, who owns The Ice Cream Farm.
“What we’ve seen in the last decade is that you need to be flexible and adapt,” added Jonathan. “In the early days it was all about coping with the footfall. Now it’s sustaining it.
“Like all businesses, we’re facing increasing financial challenges and seeing that our customers are being more careful about where they spend their money.
“But thanks to the addition of the new attraction, we’re increasing value, enhancing the visitor experience, and future-proofing the business for our 300 staff in our rural Cheshire community.”
