ACO launches Silt Channel and Silt Stone to manage stormwater and improve water quality in rain gardens

With rising demand for water management and filtration solutions in the built environment, ACO Water Management has launched two new rain garden solutions that join its growing sustainable drainage portfolio.

The Silt Channel and Silt Stone have been purpose-designed to comply with Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) guidelines and remove sediment from water before it enters rain gardens.

Rain gardens and bioretention rain gardens are engineered green spaces intended to capture surface water runoff and are most frequently used in urban areas. Both of ACO’s new solutions have been created specifically to manage the road and pavement surface water runoff that drains into rain gardens, helping to capture and distribute water evenly, reduce erosion and improve long-term infiltration.

The Silt Channel and Silt Stone trap sediment before it enters the rain garden and prevents soil clogging, reducing maintenance costs and extending the garden’s life span.

ACO’s Silt Channel is installed flush with pavement edges or behind smaller kerb openings to capture silt and distribute water evenly into rain gardens. Made from polymer concrete to withstand harsh outdoor conditions, the surface and design is easy to sweep clean during scheduled plant maintenance routines. The Silt Stone is suited for larger, 600mm openings or corner entrances where there is a high water volume and works to distribute water and trap sediment quickly and effectively. While efficient on their own, both of ACO’s new products can be used in conjunction for optimal performance.

The off-the-shelf silt solutions eliminate the need for bespoke, labour-intensive site-built entrances and provide a consistent, easy-to-install system. Both the Silt Stone and Silt Channel have also been constructed in line with SuDS compliance for sustainable drainage, and in turn, reduce pollutants and microplastics in the water by intercepting silt that commonly contains them.

Michelle Osborne, Product Manager - Civils at ACO Water Management, said: “Maintenance costs and SuDS performance is a major consideration in the UK. We know rain gardens and bioretention rain gardens are part of a broader push for sustainable urban drainage, and while they seem to be popping up in most towns and cities, it’s important that the materials used to build them are of a high quality, and they conform to SuDS guidance. That’s one of the reasons why we’ve launched the Silt Channel and Silt Stone, to provide solutions that work for both the built and natural environment.”

The new ACO Silt Channel and Silt Stone are now available through ACO’s merchant network, providing a ready-made, reliable solution for water management.
